STARTING POINT: Pugneys Country Park, Wakefield, West Yorkshire

DESTINATION: Whitby, North Yorkshire

The rendezvous point this year will be THE STAKESBY ARMS

DEPARTURE TIME (FROM WAKEFIELD): 9am (prompt)

WHAT IS IT? A mass scooter ride-out to the historic coastal town of Whitby on the East coast of England. The Whitby Run is also the first ride-out affiliated with the up-and-coming National automatic scooter club: F.A.S.T. (Federation of Automatic Scooterists).

The event, now in its second year, is once again being organised by Paul Robinson here at Italjet Dragster.com If you only go on one scooter ride-out this year, don't miss out on this one! ALL scooterists are welcome on The Whitby Run.

THE PLAN: The meeting place is Pugneys Country Park in Wakefield, West Yorkshire. Riders should try to arrive at Pugneys well before 9am in the morning of Sunday 21st of August for the ride to Whitby. The ride itself will take in some breathtaking views via A-roads across the North Yorkshire Moors. There will be various stops and pick-up points along the way including Goathland or 'Aidensfield' as the place is perhaps more commonly known in the TV series Heartbeat. If you decide to meet up for the ride or want to make your own way there, then the rendezvous point will be the Scotch Head bandstand, next to the pier (west side) in Whitby.

THE RIDE: The proposed route from Wakefield covers a distance of approximately 80 miles (no motorways) and is as follows:

Depart at 9am (prompt) from Pugneys Country Park, Wakefield (this is the starting point of the ride to Whitby). Pugneys Country Park is located on the A636 in between Wakefield and Junction 39 of the M1 (off Denby Dale Road).

We will then leave Wakefield via the A636 heading out towards Stanley, Garforth then Barwick in Elmet. We will then travel via the A64 and our first pick up point along the way will be at The Highwayman Cafe (at approx. 10am) for riders joining us in the York area. We will then proceed via the A64 then the A169 for Pickering (stopping for fuel at the BP garage) followed by a scenic ride over the North York Moors.

The next stop-off point before Whitby will be Goathland where we will meet up with members of Whitby Scooter Club and other scooter clubs who have been invited from Scarborough, Pickering, Redcar and Middlesborough. There will be a short break here for refreshments and photo's etc. before the last stretch of the journey to Whitby. At Whitby, the rendezvous point will be next to the 'Scotch Head Bandstand' by the pier on the west side of the harbour.

NOTE TO RIDERS: Please make sure that you have enough fuel before the ride-out commences as there will be only one fuel stop along the way which will be the BP garage in Pickering.

Is your scooter fast enough? Over the course of the journey, depending on the legal speed limits, the average cruising speed will be approximately 50 to 60mph so please bear this in mind if you've got a 50cc scooter and are wondering if it will be fast enough to keep up with the group. Allowances will be made to keep the group together and ensure that riders arrive at Whitby safely.

The North Yorkshire Police have been informed about The Whitby Run, so this will hopefully ensure that we are not interrupted along the way, as long as everyone is riding sensibly and considerately. So please bear this in mind.

AT WHITBY...

Once in Whitby, as well as the tourist attractions that Whitby has to offer, riders are invited to adjourn to the Stakesby Arms pub where Whitby S.C. will be putting on a BBQ and music.

TAG (formerly Twist & Go Scooter Magazine) will also be present upon arrival in Whitby and will be handing out freebies to Whitby Run attendees as well as staging a mini 'on the spot' custom show.

The proposed plan for the day is as follows:

09:00 - Depart from Pugneys Country Park, Wakefield
10:30 - (1st stop) The Highwayman Cafe, York (A64) (break for 15 mins)
11:15 - (2nd stop) Fuel stop @ BP Garage, Pickering
12:15 - (3rd stop) Goathland (break for 15 mins)
13:00 - Arrive at Whitby seafront (break for for 1 hour)
14:00 - Adjourn to The Stakesby Arms, Whitby

So: ONE HOUR after arrival in Whitby, adjourn to The Stakesby Arms. The plan (if parked up by the bandstand) is to proceed to the top of West Cliff, past Captain Cook's Monument, continue along the North Promenade and make our way to The Stakesby Arms pub where you will get the chance to relax, have a drink and get a bite to eat (a BBQ is being put on by the landlord of the pub). TAG magazine will also be present and handing out freebies.

N.B. The above times are approximate.

The Stakesby Arms is situated at:
1 Byland Road, Whitby, YO21 1JH

MAP OF WHITBY

A map for Whitby Run attendees is now available for download, just save it to disk and print it out. The purpose of the map is to show riders where the proposed meeting places are once in Whitby. As you will see on the map there are three destinations. Upon arrival in Whitby the plan is to park up at either the Scotch Head Bandstand or next to Captain Cook's monument. So depending on how many bikes there are and space restrictions this will determine where the group ends up. As planned, ONE HOUR after arrival in Whitby the plan then is to adjourn to The Stakesby Arms.

THE JOURNEY HOME

Once at Whitby, riders can make their own way home at any time, so it's up to you what you want to do for the journey home.

Like last year, a group of riders are planning to stop at Squires Cafe Bar at Sherburn in Elmet. Squires is one of the norths most popular biker haunts, the 'Ace Cafe of the North' if you like. Click here to see a map.
