THE BEAST - DE-RESTRICTING A 50CC DRAGSTER
N.B.
The following information provided here relates to riding a 50cc
Dragster in the UK, it is important that you check the relevant
legal implications before de-restricting.
The bottom-line is, any Scooter nowadays which is not capable
of 40mph is dangerously slow on todays roads, and can be hindrence
to yourself and other road users. The in-ability to quickly pull
away from a busy roundabout for example simply spells danger.
However, de-restricting, depending on your particular circumstances
can be illegal.
So, can I legally de-restrict my 50cc Dragster? Here in the UK, you
basically have to be 17 years or older and have either a full or provisional
motorcycle licence (A or A1 categories). If you have a provisional
licence then you must have a valid CBT certificate which needs
renewing every 2 years until you pass your test for a full licence.
The de-restriction itself basically involves removing an exhaust
restrictor and a pulley spacer hence, a power increase will be
gained. These are the most common forms of mechanical restriction
nowadays which basically limits the gearing of your scooter. Any
changes made by yourself though are at your own risk. It is advisable
to get your Scooter de-restricted by a qualified mechanic i.e.
contact your nearest Italjet dealer.
