On the 23rd September the NSA (National Sprint Association) will be
holding a sprint meeting at Santa Pod Raceway. There will be a scooter class
and the meeting is open to non-members of the NSA. This is different to a
public test day as it is a closed meeting so you will be able to experience
proper sprint racing. The advantages are no cars or general public entrants.
Firstly, this saves time stood waiting around (like at the last scooter
sprint at Santa Pod) and therefore gives you more runs up the track. Also
you get the chance to see and sprint against proper racers not just some
bloke who's turned up for the day in his Vauxhall Nova. Don't be put off by
this though thinking that you will be looked at as inexperienced or easy pickings.
The atmosphere at these things is so relaxed it's untrue. On the day, you will
also see a wide variety of classic and modern day sprint bikes, well worth it.
Judging by the times that were set at the last scooter sprint on the
15th July, you will probably be able to give a few of those classic bikes a
run for their money. This meeting is open to classic scooters and twist and
go's alike. If enough people enter there may again be a chance to win trophies.
Also, we are sure one of the relevant scooter magazines will cover the event. Of
course there are a few different rules to adhere to as this meeting is
governed by the ACU (Auto Cycle Union) but if you are interested in
sprinting this is the perfect meeting to get started.
If you fancy having a go, you will need to make note of the following:
CLOTHING:
1. You will require one or two-piece leathers.
2. Leather gloves and protective boots.
3. An open or full-face helmet displaying ACU gold sticker.
4. Identification disc displaying name and date of birth (these are
available from army surplus stores in the form of 'dog tags').
MACHINES:
As your scooter will be 'scrutineered' the following should be observed:
1. Good working brakes.
2. Ball-end levers.
3. Headlight and rear lights taped up.
4. Free from any oil leeks.
5. No sharp edges or bits hanging off the machine.
6. Road-worthy tyres.
7. Rear facing number board.
COSTS:
If you pre-enter the cost is £25 this includes two passes into the meeting.
If you enter on the day the cost is still £25 but you will also have to pay
to get into the venue which is £8 per person. You will also require
an ACU day licence £6 available on the day and a one day membership to the NSA £1.
